Breast reconstruction techniques
Immediate reconstruction with implants
The best scenario is reconstruction at the time of mastectomy. This is known as immediate reconstruction. It can be reconstructed using implants along with support materials such as dermal matrices, GalaflexⓇ mesh, and other options. In this way the patient will not have to have their breast removed.
Reconstruction with expanders
In some cases where the mastectomy tissues do not allow for direct implant placement, tissue expanders may be used. These can be combined with other materials to improve the support of mastectomy flaps. In many cases, additional surgery is required to replace the expander with a definitive implant. This is done several months later.
Reconstruction with your own tissue
In some other cases it is better to use your own tissues to replace the breast at the time of or after the mastectomy. Factors such as; the shape and size of the healthy breast, skin severely damaged by radiation therapy, and the patient's desire may make the use tissue from the abdomen, back or other remote sites the best option. We also use the patient's own fat to correct deformities secondary to mastectomy and previous reconstructions. This procedure is known as Lipo-cellular Regeneration or advanced lipotransfer. Dr. Juan José Ruiz Treviño, MD, FACS performs the most advanced breast reconstruction in Monterrey for patients from all over Mexico and the world.
