Breasts are considered one of the main attributes of a woman’s beauty. The function of the breasts is not only to nurse children; they accompany a woman every day of her life. Breast reconstruction is not vanity; it is a functional need for women who face disease or malformation that compromises their well-being.
The main cause of losing a breast is breast cancer. This terrible disease affects 1 in 8 women in our population. Fortunately, when detected early, it is highly curable. Breast reconstruction is an integral part of modern breast cancer treatment. The best time to reconstruct is at the time of breast removal (during mastectomy). In this way, you will not see yourself amputated. However, reconstruction can also be done afterward; at any time.
There are also developmental malformations and even accidents in which part or all of a breast is lost. Every woman is unique and every case is different; therefore, it is essential to examine you in the consultation and design a personalized treatment plan.
Keep in mind that priority is your life and health, then function, and lastly aesthetics. Breast reconstruction helps to recover the function of the lost organ as well as aesthetics. Almost any woman with breast cancer is a candidate for reconstruction. Breast reconstruction does not affect the course of the disease; it affects and improves a woman’s quality of life.
There are many ways to reconstruct the affected or lost breast, from implants and expanders to techniques that use your own tissue. During the consultation we will explore the best options so you can be sure that you will obtain the maximum benefit from reconstruction.
The ideal scenario is reconstruction at the time of mastectomy. This is known as immediate reconstruction. It can be done using implants combined with support materials such as acellular dermal matrices (Dermacell), GalaFLEX™ mesh, and other options. This way the patient will not have to see herself without a breast.
In some cases where the tissues from the mastectomy do not allow direct implant placement, tissue expanders can be used. These can be combined with other materials to improve support of the mastectomy flaps. In many cases an additional surgery is required to replace the expander with a permanent implant. This is done several months later.
In certain cases it is better to use the patient’s own tissues to replace the breast at the time of or after mastectomy. Factors such as the shape and size of the healthy breast, skin severely damaged by radiation, and the patient’s wishes may make using tissue from the abdomen, back, or other remote sites the best option.
We also use the patient’s own fat to correct deformities secondary to mastectomy and previous reconstructions. This procedure is known as Lipocellular Regeneration or advanced lipotransfer.
If you are a woman who wishes to reconstruct her breasts or know someone who needs it, come see us.
